What to Do in Interlaken, Switzerland –
50 Ideas for Things to Do
Interlaken is so ridiculous – so ridiculously beautiful that you, like me, will probably fall head over heels in love with it.
If you are thinking about visiting Interlaken, one of the most gorgeous regions in the world, and you are not sure what you should do there this post is the perfect post for you – giving you 50 ideas on what to do and see in this place called heaven on earth.
I personally think it is one of the most beautiful regions of the world and one of the best places to visit in Switzerland: gorgeous lakes, perfect mountains, stunning sceneries and cute towns all around. I can truly say, that this part of Switzerland has stolen my heart.
Though Interlaken is not geographically big, there are tons of fun things to do in Interlaken. I should add that there are two different regions actually, Interlaken and Jungfraujoch.
However, sometimes it is a bit hard to differentiate between the two regions, so this post is mostly about activities in both regions but also include a couple of tips for the Bernese Oberland in general.
Though many people argue that Switzerland is too expensive to travel to I (partly agree and thus have listed my top tips for saving money in Switzerland here) but also argue that there are enough things you can do that does not cost much at all or that are even free.
Apparently, there are also tons of tours and activities that are also made for tourists and travelers that like a bit more exclusivity. Tip: with the Jungfrau Pass you can save loads of money if you plan to use gondolas, buses, visit attractions etc.
I love the diversity of activities. There are activities for the adrenaline junkies (well, there are tooons of things for them), for the more or less lazy people (like me), for hikers and and and (which includes free things to do in Interlaken).
Find a list of 50 great things to do in the – perfect – region of the Bernese Oberland but before talking about th epoints of interests in Interlaken here are some general travel tips for Interlaken.
General Travel Tips for Interlaken
Language: Though Germany is the main language most people speak English. There are many Arabic, Chinese and Indian restaurants as Interlaken is extremely popular amongst tourists from those places. However, you can also find all other kinds of cuisines and fast-food restaurants.
Interlaken is expensive – Switzerland is expensive and Interlaken is one of the most expensive parts in Switzerland. To find out how to save money on your Switzerland trip click here. You can pay in Swiss Franks, but € and $ is also widely accepted – however, you are better off by paying in Swiss Francs.
How to Get Around in Interlaken
Driving in Interlaken is very safe and easy (the streets are well paved, driving in the mountains might be a bit tricky though). Public transportation in Interlaken is extremely easy as buses/trains go often, are punctual and reliable, so I recommend getting around by public transportation.
Security Tips for Interlaken
Interlaken is safe! Seriously, Switzerland feels safe and so does Interlaken. Since Interlaken is extremely popular amongst wealthy tourists from all over the world (and the region is wealthy in general) I never felt I had to take extra precautions – you can wear expensive jewelry, bags, and walk around alone by night without having to worry. Exercise common sense you are fine to go – Interlaken is also great for solo female travelers.
Where to Stay in Interlaken
Interlaken is home to some amazing hotels – amazing and expensive.
If you are on a budget I recommend staying outside of Interlaken, some cute towns close by that offer good value for money.
50 Great Things to Do in the Region of Jungfrau and Interlaken
1) Grindelwald and Grindelwald-First
Grindelwald is one of the cutest villages, and a must-see place in the region of Interlaken, of Switzerland and should be on your list – and while you are in Grindelwald, visit Grindelwald First as well.
2) White Water Rafting
You cannot leave Interlaken without having done some outdoor activities – try a white water rafting tour from river Lütschine and paddle through the choppy water.
Experience the powerful waterfalls in Interlaken: the Trümmelbachfälle, be prepared for a loud, wet and cool experience. Luckily I did not take my DSL with me (I went after some very heavy rain) but if you have a GoPro or waterproof camera you are good to go and might be able to take good pictures.
One of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland (and thus in the world) is the Bachalpsee (Bachalp Lake). Hiking or strolling around the Bachalpsee and should be on your list.
Castles are probably not the first thing that come to most people´s mind when hearing about Switzerland – but there are some beautiful ones, like Unspunnen Castle which are worth to be checked out. I personally loved another one the most, so keep scrolling to find out more.
6) Kayak Day Tour
With all the beautiful lakes a kayak tour seems to be a perfect choice for the sporty ones among you (disclaimer: I do not consider myself as a sporty person so I skipped that one 🙂
7) Oeschinensee (Oeschinen Lake)
Talking about gorgeous lakes: Is not that lake beyond amazing? It is so perfect that Oeschinensee should be on everybody´s bucket list and though it is not officially in the region of Interlaken or Jungfrau it is close by and thus a perfect place to visit.
When I finally visit it was terrible weather and I could not hike around the lake but if you get the chance definitely take your time for some hiking.
How to get to Oeschinensee: Take a train to Kandersteg station, walk for about 10 minutes before arriving at the gondola station which takes you me up (return ticket about 25€, discount with a Swiss Travel Pass) and then another 20-30 minute walk needed. For the ones that do not wanna hike at all, take the little shuttle bus which brings you directly to the lake for a few €.
Do you have a favorite lake? – The weather forecast for Kantersteg (Lake Oeschinen) was bad for almost the entire time of my Switzerland trip (5 weeks!). I really, really wanted to visit this lake (some say it's the most beautiful lake in Switzerland) and so I went despite the bad weather forecast. What should I say? I saw hail as big as tennis balls (totally exaggerated) and learned how painful hail can be (not exaggerated) and don't ask me why I was wearing shorts… But it was also sunny for a while so I saw the other side as well… so far I am not sure if I can agree on the statement "the most beautiful lake in Switzerland 🤔" I think, I need to revisit to make a final judgment 😊 – #lakeoeschinen #orschinensee #kandersteg #myswitzerland #inlovewithswitzerland #saltinourhairpresets #verliebtindieschweiz #lakeheaven #heaven #beautifuldestination #beautifulmatters #beautifuldestination #travelgirl #dametraveler #darlingescapes #wearetravelgirls #cntraveler #condenasttraveler #exploretheworld #exploretheglobe #wheretonext #blogger_de #travelblogger #switzerland #switzerland_vacations #travelwithadog #instadogs #puppy #travelphotography #nikon #outdoorlovers
8) Paragliding and Hanggliding
Same same but different: Paragliding and hang gliding are fun – both in such a fantastic scenery are amazing and if you have ever wanted to do it: Interlaken is the place to paraglide or for hang gliding, and a great opportunity to see Interlaken from an eye birds perspective.
9) Boat Tour on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz
Though Switzerland, and Interlaken in particular, have several beautiful lakes, this one is my favorite. Lake Brienz has the most stunning lake color in Switzerland and I am sure it will amaze everyone. With a day ticket, you can do a boat tour on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.
While it is relaxing to just enjoy the view, I recommend hopping off on some stations- get off in Brienz or Giessbach Waterfalls and explore the parts on Interlaken a bit more.
Tip: If you want to do both boat tours start with the boat tour on Lake Brienz, as the one on Lake Thun operate longer and will not cause any stress.
10) Giessbachwasserfall and Grand Giessbach Hotel
While doing a boat tour on Lake Brienz get out at the Giessbachwasserfall stop and explore the region. You can take a funicular to get up to the amazing Grand Giessbach Hotel (a full hotel review is here) or do the easy 10-minute hike u and then hike even further and see more of this really stunning waterfall with great views of Lake Brienz.
I updated this post now (October 2017) because I really think this gorgeous 4* hotel is worth a visit. It has a unique atmosphere and the best vies of my favorite Lake Brienz. So, take this as my recommendation #51 – visit Grandhotel Giessbach.
Today I fell in love with Interlaken. I have heard so much about the beauty of both lakes there, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Finally I visited and I was overwhelmed by the Lake Brienz (will visit Lake Thun soon). It is just incredible and visiting Rothorn was another highlight of my trip! More pics are about to come but I am sure it can't get much better 💚💙💚💙💚 #myswitzerland #inlovewithswitzerland #visitswitzerland #switzerland_vacations #schweiz #switzerland #europe #paradise #interlaken #myinterlaken #madeinbern #lakebrienz #brienzersee #brienz #rothorn #lake #bucketlist
11) Jetboat Ride in Interlaken
This is definitely on my own bucket list: A jetboat ride in Interlaken.
12) Natural Park of Blausee
Okay, this is probably not really in the region of Interlaken or Jungfrau, but pretty close to Interlaken and too pretty to be ignored – this lake is tiny but gorgeous. Do a trip to Blausee Nature Park and admire the color of the Blausee.
13) Ice Climbing
This is probably the better version of rock climbing: Ice climbing in Switzerland.
14) Harder Kulm
Either hike up (compared to other hikes in the region this is considered an easy hike) or take a cable car and enjoy views like this from Harder Kulm.
Tip: With a Swiss Travel Pass you get a 50% discount and you can save money with Jungfrau Pass as well.
15) Helicopter Skydive in Interlaken
Interlaken is known as the best place for adrenaline junkies, so a helicopter skydive is a great opportunity to experience this.on your own.
Enjoy views from the highest train station in Europe – “At the top of Europe – Jungfraujoch” – and see snow throughout the year. The top of the Jungfraujoch has become one of the most popular attractions in the region and after I visited myself I see why it is so popular.
17) Kleine Scheidegg
Before heading to the top of Europe (Jungfraujoch) do not forget to soak in the views at Kleine Scheidegg along the way.
18) Niederhorn Mountain
When I visited Niederhorn Mountain it was quite cloudy but once the cloud disappeared the view was amazing. You can either hike up or take a funicular and cable car to get the good views.
Visit Schilthorn and see the Swiss Skyline from there. When visiting Shilthorn date James Bond at the 007 Walk of Fame (and visit the “007 “museum) and eat at the revolving restaurant of Piz Gloria – the movie location of the James Bond movie where everything is about James Bond.
Dating James Bond with the Swiss Skyline in the background 😊 all about my trip to #Schilthorn now up on my blog 🙂 www.arzotravels.com @schilthorn_pizgloria @jungfrauregion – – – #ad #myswitzerland #inlovewithswitzerland #visitswitzerland #switzerland_vacations #schweiz #switzerland #europe #paradise #swissskyline #pizgloria #schilthorn #jamesbond #jungfrau #jungfrauregion #berneroberland #swissalps #alps #mountains #mönch #eiger #maltese #dogs
21) Mannlichen Mountain
Visit Männlichen Mountain and see the famous Swiss Skyline (the Swiss mountains Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau) from Mannlichen Mountain.
22) High Ropes Adventure Park
There are more fun things to do in Interlaken as e.g. jumping from platforms and soar through the air High Ropes Adventure Park in Interlaken.
Located at Lake Thun Thun is one of the bigger towns in that area – don’t forget to stop by at the Oberhofen Castle in Thun but this is not the only great place to see in Thun. I was absolutely surprised to see how pretty the town center actually is and was smitten by the beautiful castle Schadau
Oh, Spiez <3 One of my most favorite places in Interlaken. I loved the village and the castle at the water – and my little Puppygak was also so in love (can you spot us in the picture?)
A big thanks to @lisa310179 who showed me around in Spiez last year… Puppy fell so in love with her and Spiez that we cannot wait to be back ✨ but right now: work ahead! – – #switzerland #myswitzerland #spiez #myinterlaken #castle #lakethun #schweiz #travelwithadog #maltese #switzerlandpictures #switzerlandtrip #switzerland2016 #switzerlandwonderland #switzerland_vacations #switzerlandtourism
More Places to Visit in Interlaken
Before you get to Schilthorn make sure to plan some time for exploring the cute car-free village of Mürren which will be on your way up. It is another great place to see in Interlaken.
Visit Pfingstegg and try out the unique toboggan run.
Beautiful Interlaken is not only a region but also this cute town with two train stations, a main shopping street, as well as an Old Town. I admit that I actually liked Thun a bit better than Interlaken but after all, Interlaken is located between the two main lakes in the region (Lake Thun and Lake Brienz) which is pretty cool.
You can also join a free walking tour and discover Interlaken by foot.
28) Picnic in Interlaken
Another free thing to do in Interlaken is to enjoy a picnic at one of the great lakes (okay you have to buy your own food but why not enjoy lunch with a view in Interlaken? So take some snacks and a blanket and admire the great scenery.
Lauterbrunnen is THE place according to outdoor lovers who are into extreme activities. Even if you are not into outdoor sports you´ll love Lauterbrunnen as it is such a pretty village within the most beautiful scenery. The word famous Staubbachwaterfall makes it pciture perfect and one of the highlights in InterlakenStaubbachwaterfall in Lauterbrunnen, Bernese Oberland, Switzerland@shutterstock
30) Night Sled Ride
Do a night sled ride and enjoy the fondue afterward.
Places to See in Interlaken
31) Brienz Rothorn
If you are a hiker you´ll enjoy the hike. But I definitely recommend using the – even just for a stop -ride up in one of the old is such a unique experience and one of the things you should do in Interlaken. Visiting the Brienzer Rothorn (on a clear) day has been one of the most amazing experiences I have made in Switzerland and it is my favorite mountain ride and it is one of the most beautiful places in Interlaken.
Grüezi 🤗 If you are in Interlaken definitely put Rothorn on your list. You can either hike up (about 2000m) or ride an old steam locomotive which brings you up. Definitely a memorable memory 💚💚💚💚 and it comes with views like these (no filter used) 💚💚💚💚 – #myswitzerland #switzerland_vacations #visitswitzerland #inlovewithswitzerland #madeinbern #arzotravels #schweiz #switzerland #nature #beauty #lakebeienz #brienzersee #brienz #interlaken #myinterlaken #rothorn #viewfromthetop #bucketlist
32) Horse Riding
Okay, as a middle school teacher I know how important the possibility of horse riding is for many (teenagers) – the good thing is that riding in the region of Interlaken is possible.
33) E-Bike Tour
Interlaken and the Jungfrau region are hilly – so an e-bike tour is a great solution to cycle your way around.
Wengen is another beautiful and car-free village that should be on your list when visiting this region.
Best Tours in Interlaken? Here are some great guided tours in Interlaken:
35) Monster Scooter Tour
Enjoy a 45 minutes downhill ride with a fun monster scooter tour from Interlaken which is one of the most fun Interlaken activities.
36) Bungee Jumping
Okay, I would not do that: but if you wanna have a more exciting experience you could bungee jump you can do that from Stockhorn Cable Car in Interlaken.
37) St. Beatus Caves
St. Beatus Caves is known for the caves but in addition, I was blown away by the views from up there. Definitely worth a visit and something you should experience and one of the top things to see in Interlaken (seriously).
Updated after my second trip to St. Beatus Caves: If you are at beautiful St. Beatus Caves walk down the other way for 10-15 minutes to enjoy the view from the famous Instagram spot (see second picture).
Interlaken you are a beauty ❤️ At St. Beatus Caves 💙💦 Today I spent some great time with wonderful @lisa310179 and I am looking forward to share some posts tomorrow 😀- #myswitzerland #inlovewithswitzerland #visitswitzerland #switzerland_vacations #schweiz #switzerland #europe #paradise #interlaken #myinterlaken #madeinbern #lake #bucketlist #bucketlist #stbeatuscaves #lakethun #thun #thunersee
38) Ski or Snowboard Lesson
I have never been skiing or snowboarding but Switzerland would be the first choice if I did one day.
39) Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge
Okay, Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge is not in Interlaken but close and should be on your bucket list as well.
40) Grindelwald Glacier Canyon
The Grindelwald Glacier Canyon is in the region of Jungfrau – add it to your list and walk towards the glacier while getting information about the canyon along the way as it is another stunning point of interest in Interlaken.
Sigriswill is a hidden gem and getting up there (by car) was not always easy as the streets became quite tight on some parts but it was worth it – the view from the Sigriswill Suspension Bridge was stunning (you can also take a bus to get up there). The ticket for passing the bridge is about $6 but with that ticket you also have entry to the most stunning Grabesmühle- probably the cutest place I have seen in Switzerland and totally unknown amongst tourists. Grabesmühle is just a few meters behind Sigriswil Suspension Bridge and I do not wanna say too much – just go there during the day and feel amazed as you have an cuteness overdose.
Sigriswil Suspension Bridge is still a little gem in Switzerland. Can't understand why: look at that view overlooking Lake Thun 💙 You find more pictures of my Switzerland trip, including many tips, on my blog (link in bio) – #sigriswil #lakethun #interlaken #switzerland #inlovewithswitzerland #verliebtindieschweiz #thunersee #myinterlaken #swiss #switzerland_vacations #berneseoberland #berneroberland #madeinbern #sigriswilbridge #panoramabridge #suspensionbridge
42) Segway Tour
Explore the region with a Segway tour.
43) Schynige Platte
One of the best views in Interlaken is from Schynige Platte, so definitely put that on your list when you visit Interlaken.
The great things about Schynige Platte is the fact that you have amazing views of the Swiss Skyline (seeing the three top mountains, Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau) on the one side (if you take the funicular you do not even have to hike up) and after a 20-minute hike from the funicular station you get to see Lake Brienz and Lake Thun, two of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland, at the same time.
Getting up with the funicular is free with the Swiss Travel Pass.
44) Go Swimming in Interlaken
Dip in one of the lakes – many are very clean and swimming is allowed in many lakes in that region (few examples, e.g. Blausee)
45) Glacier Trekking in Interlaken
Hike through snow and walk on ice – such a tour probably is a unique experience and w great thing to do in Interlaken in winter.
46) Lucerne -Interlaken Express
Train riding in Switzerland is not comparable with train riding in many other places – it is an experience in itself and something I sincerely recommend. One of the most beautiful rides in the ride from Lucerne to Interlaken.
47) Bike Tour in Interlaken
Though I mentioned that an e-bike is a good idea for Interlaken a normal bike tour is also a great way to explore the region. Be prepared to exercise a lot since – after all- it is quite a hilly region but this is also a super way to discover Interlaken.
48) Road Trip in Interlaken
Take your time and plan in many stops – Interlaken is one of the best places in Switzerland for a beautiful road trip (though there are some villages that are car-free). I am not the biggest fan of driving but, despite the mountains and sometimes narrow streets, I probably will never get enough of driving in Switzerland. Just be careful as there are many speed cams but other than that drving in Switzerland is fun.
49) Hotel Interlaken
When in Interlaken you need to sleep in one of the oldest hotels in Switzerland – Hotel Interlaken is more than 500 years old and located in the heart of Interlaken.
50) Snowshoe Tour in Interlaken
Strap into lightweight shoes and discover the peaks and valleys of the region by doing a snowshoe tour – another fun activity to do in Interlaken.
Unfortunately, not every place is as pretty as the region of Interlaken and Jungfrau so enjoy each second <3
I hope you enjoyed my post “Things to Do in Interlaken” and got some inspiration for activities to do in one of the most beautiful regions in the world. Safe travels! Arzo
