Where to Stay in Lake Como

After spending some time in Switzerland, it was still surprised to see that the prices in Como arena´t that different to Switzerland. Especially hotels are very expensive.

As I visited Lake Como twice, I started in two different areas and hotels.

If you are looking for a hotel in the town of Como you will pay way more than if you opt for a hotel in one of the areas close by.

If I visited the region again, I would book a room in the town of Bellagio – Bellagio is the prettier town and slightly cheaper.

What to Pack for Lake Como

The region can become extremely hot in the summer, so do not forget to pack some sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat and a lot of spare tops to change clothes for a hot summer day.

Booking Tours in Lake Como

Many activities mentioned here can be done without any tour guide and are even free, or do not cost a lot.

If you plan to do guided tours, I recommend GetYour Guide.

Lately, I have become a fan of GetYourGuide and so I started booking my own tours and activities mostly via them. So if you do not know them yet, try them out – you can book many tours all over the world via them, and they allow you (most of the time) to cancel tours for free (let´s face it, sometimes things just come in between) and they send out a reminder before your tour starts.

I have added a few tours for you, so just click on the links/images if you are interested in the tours.

Best Places to Visit in Lake Como in 2 Days

Before talking about the top things to do in Lake Como you´l find some important travel information for Lake Como, so you are perfectly prepared for your trip to Lake Como

Lake Como, located conveniently close to the German, Swiss and Austrian borders has become a popular spot for travelers and tourists from all over the world. There are so many things to see in Lake Como (the region) and if you are planning to do more than just relax at the lake you´ll find out about the best places to visit in Lake Como.

I visited Como with my dog twice – and here are my favorite picks for the best things to do around Lake Como.

Here is how my perfect itinerary looks like and this is what you can do in two days in Lake Como.

What to See in Lake Como in 2 Days

Lake Como comprises among others of the towns, Como and Bellagio and you´ll find tips for these towns as well as for some other places in Lake Como. I recommended starting with exploring Como and here are the best things to do in Como.

Visit Como

Things to do in Como.

You should plan half a day to one full day for visiting the more prominent town, Como.

Old Town

It has a cute old town and town center with a beautiful cathedral, and it is fun to get lost in the streets of Como.

Small cafes invite you to have a drink and take a rest while watching people strolling through the streets. I could spend hours with getting lost in the narrow streets and checking out the smaller shops.

However, though Como is lovely I admit that it is not mind-blowing, and it is also pretty expensive. Spending one day in Como itself is enough and there also some other spots worth to be checked out.

(Tip: If you are into Italian food why not do a Como Food Tour? To find out more about it, click here to find out more about food tours in Lake Como)

Definitely put the market square with the promenade in Como on your list – it is one of the main tourist attraction in Como -where a lot of cafes and restaurants allow you to overlook the gorgeous lake. Again, the market square is nice but also not the most beautiful one I have been to in that region (aka Switzerland and also Italy).

Boat Tour

The most prominent resident of Como is George Clooney – if you want to see his house (or better the villa of George Clooney), you can do a boat tour and see his and many more beautiful villas lined up at Lake Como (boat tour is my must-do if in Como).

The speedboat-tour in Como is actually one of the best things you can do in Lake Como or better on Lake Como. It is fun, though not free but great on a hot day. It includes Lake Como sightseeing and a cool breeze.

Since it can get really hot and humid this is the best chance to have a fresh breeze and see those million dollar houses at the lake. If you prefer it a bit calmer you could do a Dinner Cruise Tour on Lake Como.

More places to visit in Lake Como – After exploring Como for half a day it is time to visit this cute uphill town.

Visit Brunate

Besides the boat tour, I enjoyed my trip to Brunate the most, as a visit of Brunate is another top tip in Como.

Brunate is a small village on the mountain –  you´ll have great views over Lake Como and Como, and walking around that little village is a little highlight.

How to get from Como to Brunate?

You can use a cable car to get up and the cable car station is located quite central and next to the market square (I am sure you can also hike up Brunate, but I did not try that out due to laziness). If you are more into real hikes you can find some ideas for hikes in the Lake Como area here.

More Things to See in Lake Como

Day 2 in Lake Como could start with a excursion to Lake Pusiano.

Lake Pusiano in the Region of Lake Como

If you are interested in visiting quieter places I recommend Lake Pusiano, a hidden gem in the region of Como.

Lake Pusiano is just close to Como and is not visited by many tourists (yet).

It is one of those little peaceful pieces on earth where time is standing still. Only few boats are allowed on that lake and the island on that lake, Isola dei Cypressi, is a small island home to many animals  – including little kangaroos and different kind of birds (dogs are usually not allowed).

More Beautiful Places in Lake Como

Okay, time to start visiting my favorite area in Lake Como.

Visit Bellagio

Things to Do in Bellagio Italy

My favorite area in Lake Como, however, was most likely Bellagio. It is the best place in Lake Como – if you ask me. It si extreme pretty and though it is smaller than Como it is more colorful and I would say, more beautiful.

I fell in love with the old and prominent stairways of Bellagio and the beautiful promenade with many flower pots everywhere. The stairways are probably the main point of interest in Lake Como and there is a reason – walking down the stairs makes you feel pretty cool, or at least I felt cool :).

I did not get to spend that much time in Bellagio itself but if you enjoy sweet, romantic towns, and beautiful promenades – where you can have a drink in one of the numerous cafes – you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Let´s face it: Bellagio is more picturesque than COmo.

Best views over Lake Como in Bellagio

My top tip is to eat at Trattoria Baita Belvedere at the top of Bellagio, Italy. It seriously is the best place to visit in Bellagio to eat.

It has one of the most beautiful views for dining in Bellagio or probably the whole region, and the prices are affordable (organic and regional food).

Another thing to do in Bellagio: If you are interested in cycling and have some time left, you will enjoy a visit at the museum Madonna del Ghisallo“. If you are not, then you will at least enjoy another great view on Lake Como 🙂

As you can see this Lake Como itinerary is quite busy if you only stay there for 48 hours, though it is doable, if you have more time you could take more time and do these things in 3 or 4 days.

As mentioned at the beginning, Como is pretty but did not blow me away – Bellagio did, however. While there are more Lake Como tourist attractions the above mentioned places should not be missing on your 2 day itinerary Lake Como.

If you do not have 48 hours but only 1 day at Lake Como and like to do a day trip from Milan you can check out tours here (including hotel pick-up from Milan)
