Is a Lucerne Walking Tour Worth it?

Yes, a Lucerne walking tour is worth it – it is a great way to explore the city. The vibrant old town of Lucerne is full of beautiful buildings, churches including the pretty Jesuit Church, and monuments that tell stories about the history and culture of the city.

Is Lucerne Walkable?

Though Lucerne is surrounded by the Swiss Alps in Central Switzerland, the good news is: Lucerne is a very walkable city. Many main sights can be easily walked to. From the famous wooden Chapel Bridge to the Old Town with attractions like the Lion Monument – the most famous Swiss sculptor- the best and easiest way to see them is to walk.

However, because of the cobblestone streets, I highly recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Be prepared to walk a couple of kilometers in Lucerne. While you might need hiking boots for some outdoor activities in the Swiss Alps, in the case of Lucerne´s city center just flat and comfy shoes should be fine.

For some attractions outside the city center – like Mount Rigi or the Verkehrshaus – you will need to get there by car, cable car, bike, or public transport.

How Many Days in Lucerne?

One day in Lucerne is enough to explore the well-preserved medieval architecture and the main sights in the city center, like the old town or the Chapel Bridge, and a museum or two.

You can easily add a walking tour to this one-day itinerary – then you will also have seen the main sights of Lucerne. Two days is a good amount of time in Lucerne if you want to add a mountain excursion and/or a boat cruise on Lake Lucerne.

WHAT TO WEAR FOR A LUCERNE WALKING TOUR?

Here are some tips on what to wear for a Lucerne walking tour.

Comfortable walking shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so it’s important to wear comfortable shoes that can handle the cobblestone streets and uneven terrain. Sneakers or walking shoes are a good choice.

Layered clothing: Switzerland’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to wear layers that you can easily take off or put on as needed. A light jacket or sweater is a good choice, even in the summer months.

Sun protection: If you’re walking during the daytime, make sure to wear a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Sunglasses can also be helpful.

Comfortable pants or shorts: Wearing comfortable pants or shorts that allow for ease of movement is a good idea. Avoid tight or restrictive clothing that may make it difficult to walk comfortably.

Backpack or purse: Bring a small backpack or purse to carry your water bottle, sunscreen, camera, and any other essentials you may need during your tour.

Water bottle: Free water from fountains is just one of the amazing things in Switzerland – there is no need to buy expensive water in bottles that also harm the environment. So bring a bottle with you – you will come across fountains where you can refill your bottle during the Lucerne walking tour!

Overall, it’s important to wear comfortable clothing that allows for ease of movement and protection from the elements.

I know, I know, strictly and non-strictly speaking, an eTUKTuk city tour of Lucerne is not a walking tour. But it seems like so much fun, I felt I have to add it here. Also, it gets quite close to a hop-on and hop-off bus tour, so here is a special guided tour to explore Lucerne.

Begin your tour at the Culture and Congress Center (KKL) and then cross the Seebrücke Bridge for breathtaking views of the lake and the iconic Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge). Marvel at the impressive 17th-century Hofkirche (Church of St. Leodegar) and its famous organ before visiting the impressive Löwendenkmal (Lion Monument).

The tour will also take you through the charming old town and some off-the-beaten-path secret spots.
