THINGS TO DO IN WÜRZBURG – ITINERARY

So, here are my tips for what to do in Wurzburg, what to see, which places to visit in one day, and a few more important travel tips.

Residenz Würzburg 

The Residence Palace -Residenz Würzburg in German – is a must-see in Wurzburg and a great place to start your Wurzburg itinerary.

• The palace is located close to the city center, and you can easily get there on foot.  

Welcome to Residence Place, a magnificent 18th-century palace that used to house the Würzburg prince-bishop. As one of Europe’s most prominent baroque palaces, it’s a must-visit destination for any history or architecture buff.

But don’t worry, you don’t have to pay a dime to appreciate its beauty! The pretty gardens (which are free to visit) are perfect for a leisurely stroll, and you’ll be treated to stunning views from every angle.

During summer, the gardens come to life with blossoming flowers, making it the ultimate spot to unwind and relax on one of the many benches provided. If you’re feeling extra curious, don’t hesitate to join a guided tour and see what lies behind the palace’s walls. Since I was traveling with my little dog, I had to skip that, but this is probably

Opening Hours & Prices

• April-October: daily 9 am-6 pm (last entry: 5.30 pm)
  November-March: daily 10 am-4.30 pm (last entry: 4 pm)
• Closed: The Residence is closed only on 1 January, Shrove Tuesday, and 24, 25, and 31 December.
• The Court Garden is open daily until dusk (8 pm at the latest).
• Tickets are around 9€, and children under 18 years can visit for free.

Old Town /Town Center

It is time to visit Würzburg’s Altstadt – the enchanting old town. Meander through its winding cobblestone streets and admire the stunning architecture of its historic buildings. There are a few must-see buildings, but my suggestion is to let your feet guide you through the many shops, restaurants, and historic landmarks. Trust me, you won’t regret taking a leisurely stroll through this picturesque town.

A few places that are the main attractions in the old town of Wurzburg include the Falkenhaus, with its bright yellow rococo façade (which is home to the tourism office), the Marienkapelle (a church in gothic style from the 15th century), the Market Square, or the Four Tubes Fountain-

Würzburg Cathedral

Welcome to the fascinating world of Würzburg Cathedral, also known as the Würzburger Dom! Did you know that this impressive church was the first one ever built in the city, way back in 788? While the original structure may not be visible anymore, the current building that you can marvel at today dates back to the 13th century.

This magnificent Romanesque church, dedicated to St. Kilian, is one of the largest of its kind in Germany.

But wait, there’s more! If you have an appreciation for art, be sure to explore the different works of art housed within the walls of this stunning cathedral.

Julius Promenade

Looking for a spot in the city center to grab a bite and take a break? Look no further than Julius Promenade! While it may not be the most scenic street in town, it’s got everything you need for a satisfying meal.

Whether you’re on a tight budget or looking to splurge, you’ll find plenty of restaurants serving up delicious fare. And the best part? You’ll be in great company, as locals and visitors alike flock to this popular spot. So why not add Julius Promenade to your lunchtime rotation and see what all the fuss is about?

Marienberg Festung 

If you’re up for some adventure and great views, make a stop at the Marienberg Fortress! From the Julius promenade, you can either take a leisurely stroll or catch a bus to reach this hilltop gem.

Once there, you’ll be treated to stunning panoramic views of the city that are sure to leave you speechless. Don’t miss out on the chance to add this iconic destination to your travel itinerary!

Did you know that the first part of this magnificent building was actually built in the 8th century? Its rich history continued as the main part was constructed in the 12th century, and from the 13th to the 18th century it served as the ruling seat of the Würzburg prince-bishops.

While the Residence Palace later became their seat of power, this stunning structure remains a testament to their long and storied legacy.

You can take in these stunning views absolutely for free. That’s right – by simply walking along the walls, you can bask in the beauty of the cityscape. But if you’re looking to get a closer look at the Princes’ Building, you’ll need to snag yourself a ticket.

Don’t worry though – it’s only about 4€. Trust me, the sights are worth it!

• Closed from November – March 15th

Marienbrücke (Brücke)

Looking to soak up some local vibes and take in the scenic views of Marienbrücke? If you’re in town on a sunny day, this is the perfect spot to wrap up your day in style. Be sure to join the bustling crowds and grab a refreshing drink from one of the cute cafes nearby.

Then, sit back and soak in the sights from the stunning Marienbrücke Bridge. It’s the ultimate way to unwind and experience life like a true local. 

You might have seen it on your way to the Marienberg Fortress, but make also sure to cross it. From there, you can get a stunning view of the fortress and the Main River. And guess what? The bridge itself is a unique attraction, with beautiful artwork and intricate details that are worth checking out.

So, while you sip on your drinks, don’t forget to take a closer look at the bridge and appreciate its beauty. 

The Marienbrücke is a gem of a location that’ll make you fall even harder for Germany (and this charming city in particular). Trust me, soaking up the view on a beautiful day – with a refreshing drink in hand, if you so choose – is an experience you won’t soon forget.
