How to Choose the Best Carry-On Luggage for Your Travels

How to Choose the Best Carry-On Luggage for Your Travels

Choosing the perfect carry-on luggage nowadays is pretty important- especially if you do not want to check your luggage (for whatever reason) or if you just do not travel light.

I often fly with budget airlines, and if I fly for 2-3 days, I do not check my luggage – mostly because I do not want to pay the checked bag fees most airlines charge now. Also, I keep my valuables with me at any times, as well as fragile items, so my carry-on luggage is always important. I have a couple of pieces of luggage that I swap – depending on my needs and the trip (read how to pack the perfect carry-on).

Wondering how to find the perfect carry-on luggage? I hope this post helps you to choose the correct one. There are a few things you should consider before choosing your luggage, so find out what you need to know beforehand: I differentiate between three different pieces of carry-on luggage:

2-Wheels (Rollers) or 4-Wheels (Spinners)

If you ask me, I would go with 4-wheels every time. They are extremely handy, much easier to pull than their 2-wheeled counterpart, and I think it is one of the best inventions ever. Most new items on the market have 4-wheels nowadays.

The only disadvantage might be that they are less stable (though I have never had any problems with mine, this is just hear-say).

Soft One Vs.Hard Shell

The hard-shell protects items better, but the soft ones are sometimes expendable and have extra pockets.

Tip: Though I am sometimes a bargain hunter myself, I actually think that, in this case, quality wins over price.

I do not think you have to spend hundreds or thousands, but invest in some good luggage.

I have not tested out too many wheeled carry-ons, but I have always been happy with Samsonite, which is not a cheap brand, but also not one of the most expensive ones out there either. The cheaper ones I tried, showed some issues (broken zipper etc. after a while).

How to Find the Perfect Weekender

I am a fan of weekenders, and when I travel, I sometimes have both my wheeled bag and my weekender with me.

Weekend bags are easier to squeeze under your seat and can be more practical.

On the other hand, you have to carry a lot of weight with you, so you need to think if you want to do that or would prefer the wheeled bags. I admit that the design of the weekender is quite important to me, and so is the size, the weight, and its many extra pockets.

Also important: handles, and a shoulder strap. I got mine a while ago, but this is one weekender that seems to tick all the boxes.

How to Find a Wheeled Backpack

Wheeled backpacks can be pretty handy- either you roll them, use them as “normal” carry-on luggage, or as a normal backpack.

You should check the size of the handles to make sure that they are adjustable and long enough, though a backpack without wheels has the advantage of being easier to squeeze into places.

Since it has wheels, I would suggest that you invest a bit more in a good backpack that has a lot of extra pockets and is also very lightweight.  Check out this wheeled backpack with the best reviews.
