Review: Vegetarian Dining at Galerie Schweizerhof Lucerne
Nowadays, many restaurants have adopted some vegetarian and even vegan menus to meet the demand of vegetarians/vegans and people who just want to eat healthier. In Switzerland, I sometimes struggle to find enough vegetarians and healthy options.
However, that was not the case at Galerie, a restaurant part of Schweizerhof Lucerne (read my hotel review here) and if you wonder where to get good vegetarian food in Lucerne this might be a good option for you.
Schweizerhof Lucerne, and the Galerie, is very close to the train station and next to the beautiful Lake Lucerne. If you sit outside you´ll have a perfect view on the lake and the Alpes.
But I also, because I am a city girl, enjoyed the view on the street which is in front and where so much was going that (especially that day because of a football match). There are not tons of seats outside, so I recommend booking a table in advance to make sure you´ll get a great view in summer. Indoor seating is available.
My friend and I had dinner the day England played against Italy (European championship 2016). We sat at the terrace with a beautiful view of the Vierwaldstätterseee (the lake) and perfect to watch people. There were a couple of screens and quite a lot of people watching, so the atmosphere was really lovely but also really loud :).
We both ordered the vegetarian dishes. While she ordered the pre-recommended menu, I for myself I didn’t. I always prefer to choose rather than have a fixed menu.
It started with the baguettes and some spreads, I loved the different kinds of baguettes. Then the kitchen sent us a greeting. I am not the biggest ginger fan so I was looking more forward to the starter.
I started with a very good healthy salad – green salad, strawberries, and asparagus. What an interesting and delicious composition. Since asparagus is a summer food I am not sure about the options in winter.
My personal highlight however, were definitely the potato gnocchis, with white cream and asparagus and carrots. Potato gnocchis are quite stuffing but that had been so delicious that I could have eaten several plates of it. They were soft and in combination with the cream just perfect. I still think about it sometimes and I would definitely choose it again.
I always love desserts and have problems deciding on one. It is great to have the option to choose several and so I was in dessert heaven at Galere Schweizerhof Lucerne. I went for the dessert sampler – which has several desserts on a plate (not that I was not full already).
I think that’s a great choice if you don’t know what to do. There should always be like a big plate with some bites of every dessert.
We had some sweets (beautiful mini cakes) coming with the espresso/cafe as well, but I squeezed them (they were so soft and it seems I am too strong :/ before I had the chance to take good pictures :(.
While we were having dinner, Italy won the match. The streets filled with millions (well, not really but that was what it felt like) of Italians celebrating their win. It was so nice sitting there and enjoying the beautiful atmosphere while dining. It all became even more special and the whole evening was just perfect.
Switzerland, and especially Lucerne, is expensive. So I was surprised to find out that the prices at Galeria were very reasonable and did not blow me away. You can enjoy a nice dinner, with delicious food, attentive and friendly staff with a great view for reasonable prices at Galerie Schweizerhof Lucerne. While I had perfect vegetarian options there are many options with meat and seafood as well, but the vegan options at Galeria are a very limited.
Oh, and what I really liked, and which made the restaurant even more likable, was following fact: The restaurant charges for tap water (not much by the way). That money is donated to a good cause which tries to help those who don’t have access to clean water.
