Schaffhausen – where to sleep

Review: Hotel Rüden Schaffhausen

Hotel Rüden Schaffhausen is actually located in a guild house from the 14th and 15th centuries which makes the stay very special. And, not surprisingly, it is full of rustic charm.

Location

The 3* hotel is perfectly located at the end of the old town of Schaffhausen, and many sights are within walking distance. The train station is not too far, and you get there easily to the Rhine Falls – probably the most famous attraction in Schaffhauserland.

Rooms

I arrived quite late, wet to the skin, and had to park my car a bit further away as there are no direct parking options available. The receptionist was very friendly, but I was just happy to go straight to my room and take a shower and head to bed. The room (the hotel has 30 rooms) was not very big but clean and comfortable, and I enjoyed a very good sleep. It was probably one of the most typical Swiss experiences I have had during my stay – having a more rustic is hardly possible with wooden beams in my room and throughout the hotel.

Breakfast

When I walked my dog in the morning I could already smell the breakfast from the floor. I am not a meat and cheese eater, but I found enough alternatives to start my day right. Special emphasis is placed on regional food – for example, house-made (jam) products and eggs from Swiss free-range chicken (which is also important to me).

Spa / Gym Area

I did not have much time to spend at the hotel so I did not get to check out the restaurant or the spa or gym area (guests of the hotel have free entry to the wellness and fitness center Eurofit).

Conclusion

Would I recommend this hotel? I think I would definitely come back. I loved the charm of the house and the location (despite the lack of near parking options). These are good reasons to book the hotel. I would probably ask for a superior room if I would not be alone or if I planned on staying longer because the room was a bit small.

Tip:If you are on a budget I heard that the prices at the weekend are better than during the week.

Pets (I had my dog with me) allowed.
