Review: Hotel Mercure Severinshof Cologne
Cologne had been on my list for quite a while, but it took me a while until I finally visited Cologne in May this year. I stayed at Hotel Mercure Severinshof Cologne. Read my review to find out about the hotel and also about the Chocolate Room.
The hotel’s location is quite central, about 1.2 kilometers from Cologne main station and the city center, which makes it a good spot for being central. There is also an underground and bus stop next to the hotel so you don’t have to walk much at all. It is on the right side of the Rhine, which is more like the green path of Cologne. My main purpose for visiting Cologne was to see Adele live at Lanxess Arena which is also only 2 stops away, so it turned out it was the optimal location for me.
Check-in and Lobby
The hotel is a four-star hotel, which means it’s a decent, nice place. The check-in was done very quickly and friendly. There are 253 rooms; most of them are non-smoking rooms. I really liked the lobby and the restaurant area which is located on the ground floor. Ther is plenty space so you can sit and read, work etc. while enjoying a drink. Hotel Mercure Severinshof Cologne loves Cologne – you will notice very quickly because there are more or less discret Cologne hints :).
MyRoom – Chocolate Room
In Hotel Mercure Severinshof Cologne there are two MyRooms rooms. MyRoom this is a new concept, in which several Mercure hotels offer the chance to a few employees to decor and design one or two rooms. When booking a room through the website you can actually ask for one of the two rooms.
While one room´s theme is South Africa room and the other room is Chocolate Room. There are all kinds of rooms and I was booked in at one of the two MyRoom – rooms.
Inspired by the Cholocate Museum in Cologne the employee created the Chocolate Room which should like chocolate does, spread happiness 🙂
So, I was in the Chocolate Room. It is a room with two single beds, and it’s all about chocolate, of course. There are, for instance, some sweet posters on the wall and some signs which remind you that you are in the Chocolate Room. Best of all, there are 2 chocolate masks to treat and spoil yourself. I have seen the masks before but never actually used them but I took the chance to put it on me and I can say it smelled and tasted great (I assume it also smoothed my skin as well:).
However, I did not have any chocolate in my room as I would have expected (and as I had seen on pictures) but when I asked about it when I checked-out I was assured that normally some chocolate is on the bed (so, if you do not find any, do not be shy and ask for it 🙂
The room itself was super clean, the bed seemed too soft at the beginning but I slept throughout the night without waking up once. There is a kettle, so you can make your own tea or instant coffee.
Breakfast was on the ground floor. I think it consists of everything you can expect from a four-star hotel: Fresh eggs, a lot of different kinds of bread, sweet and hearty food. Though I do not eat honey, the highlight (probably not for vegans :), maybe, was the honey. It’s not served as we normally know, in glasses or bottles, but as a real honey comb, where you can just take out some honey with a spoon. I also liked the idea that you can take some coffee (tea etc.) to go if you are in a rush.
Sauna and Gym
The hotel has a sauna and a gym (no pool) but my time was limited so I did not check out both facilities.
Hotel Mercure is a nice city hotel and has a nice location and I really liked the atmosphere and lobby of the hotel. The MyRoom concept is pretty new and interesting and I enjoyed my stay there, though I missed out on chocolate 🙂
If you are wondering what you should see and do in Cologne check out this post on 1 Day in Cologne.
Disclaimer: I was invited by Hotel Mercure Severinshof Cologne for two nights, but as always all the pictures and views are my own.
